Description

Visits aboard our "floating classroom" include first-hand learning about geography, history, social studies and science. And no visit is complete without entertainment by the Captain, a former cruise ship juggler. The Waterfront Museum is aboard the last remaining covered wooden barge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Students learn first-hand the geography of the New York Harbor, the history of the Tug and Barge “Lighterage Era” (1860-1960), and how food and other goods were transported across the Harbor before bridges and tunnels were built. A National Park Service “National Maritime Education Initiative” Award Winner! Experience the exciting story of the rescue of Barge #79 by a clown and juggler and enjoy the captain’s showboat performance.

IMPORTANT:
A bus is needed to get to our location in Red Hook. The Subway is over a mile away.

Spring to Fall Capacity is 149 students from May 1 - October 31st.
Winter Capacity is 55 students from Nov. 1 - April 15
Last minute bookings are sometimes ok but please call David at (718) 624 4719 or email me at right.

IMPORTANT: Lastly, I have a few simple gift shop items I can offer but only if you want. Sometimes the school gets a $1 postcard or $2 tug and barge tattoo for each student or they can bring their own money and we can do the items afterwards or during lunch. Of course, it’s up to you as we won’t offer merchandise without prior approval.

"Juggling for Fun" Workshop

"Juggling for Fun" is a workshop developed by Captain David Sharps during his years with Carnival Cruise Lines working as an entertainer. Using drills, games and exercercises a group of 10 to 15 people can learn to juggle in about 1 1/2 hours. Suggested age is 10 and up. If you can throw and catch one ball, you can learn to juggle. Juggling teaches eye-hand coordination, patience, and helps develop confidence. Eye quickness develops reading skills. Can also be used for teachers and executives as a learning workshop for leadership and management skills.

The workshop can also be utilized for educators as a "teacher's workshop" - that is a group of teachers who participate. Using juggling as a medium and as a tool, one can rediscover what it is to be on the side of the student trying to learn something they don't know how to do. It is a fun experience and offers the chance to discuss and explore aspects of both teaching and learning. The workshop ends with a show and tell presentation from the teachers and a juggling demonstration.
