Description

A “floating classroom and showboat barge” housed aboard the last remaining covered wooden barge lovingly restored and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A National Park Service “National Maritime Education Initiative” Award Winner. Visitors learn first hand the geography of the New York Harbor, the history of the Tug and Barge “Lighterage Era” (1860-1960) and how food and commercial goods were transported prior to today’s bridges and tunnels. Experience the exciting story of the rescue of Barge #79 by a clown and juggler and enjoy the captain’s showboat performance. IMPORTANT: A bus is needed to get to our location in Red Hook. The Subway is over a mile away. Spring to Fall Capacity is 149 students from May 1 - October 31st. Visits aboard our "floating classroom" include first-hand learning about geography, history, social studies and science. And no visit is complete without entertainment by the Captain, a former cruise ship juggler. The Waterfront Museum is aboard the last remaining covered wooden barge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Students learn first-hand the geography of the New York Harbor, the history of the Tug and Barge “Lighterage Era” (1860-1960), and how food and other goods were transported across the Harbor before bridges and tunnels were built. A National Park Service “National Maritime Education Initiative” Award Winner! IMPORTANT: Lastly, I have a few simple gift shop items I can offer but only if you want. Sometimes the school gets a $1 postcard or $2 tug and barge tattoo for each student or they can bring their own money and we can do the items afterwards or during lunch. Of course, it’s up to you as we won’t offer merchandise without prior approval.
