Description

The Poe Museum is located in Richmond, Virginia, home town to Edgar Allan Poe, one of the finest writers of the 19th century. In his short life Poe revolutionized the horror story, invented the detective story, helped pioneer science fiction, and wrote brilliant poetry. The museum has the largest collection of artifacts related to Poe anywhere in the world on public display in its three buildings.

*Due to COVID-19, we are not currently hosting groups on-site, although we are still open to the public. We are offering virtual tours and programs!


Lunch Notes

We do not have lunch facilities. There are many restaurants nearby, some of which can handle large groups.

Bathroom Notes

There are two single-use bathrooms located in two different buildings of the museum. Groups of over 25 who anticipate needing a bathroom break should include this in their scheduling request.

The Raven Virtual Poetry Workshop

The museum's Programs Coordinator will use scansion to discover the strict metrical structure of Poe's most famous poem, "The Raven", culminating in a dramatic reading of the poem and a look at one of his last and most mysterious poems, "Ulalume".

The Tell-Tale Heart Virtual Mock Trial

In this virtual courtroom experience, a murderer is put on trial for his life after killing an old man and chopping up his body. YOU are charged with delivering the verdict--is he GUILTY or NOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY?

A Poe Museum staff member will portray the protagonist in Poe's story "The Tell-Tale Heart" while audience members will portray lawyers for the defense and prosecution, presided over by a judge and deliberated on by a jury.

Virtual Dramatic Readings

Programs Coordinator and regional stage actor Dean Knight will do a variety of dramatic readings of Poe's work, interspersed with information about Poe's life and times.
