RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability & Equity) 40.5919° N -73.7883° W

Description

Established in 2005, RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability & Equity) guided initiatives created “by the community, for the community.” We see potential in people and places that are often overlooked or marginalized. From our first community-piloted planning effort, which led to the creation of a 28-acre waterfront park on a lot that had been an illegal dumping ground, to our recent work transforming a dilapidated firehouse in the heart of Far Rockaway into a hub for youth and community programming, RISE brings people of all ages together to learn to appreciate the natural and built environment of the Rockaway peninsula in southeast Queens.

Lunch Notes

Lunch can be eaten on RISE's main floor or on the picnic tables outside in the Rockaway Hip-Hop Community Garden.

Living Classroom: Coastline Resilience

This class will focus on rising seas, and the challenges they present to coastal communities. Students will learn about the problems caused by flooding, and get to experiment with their own designs in a hands-on engineering challenge where they build their own "coastlines" and test their ability to resist flooding.

All classes take place at the RISE Center, at 58-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
Each class is an hour in length.

Workshops address a variety of topics specifically designed for Pre-K-6 classes with lessons focused on marine science, climate change, migratory birds, and more! Each workshop involves hands-on activities to actively engage learners!

All programs are free for Rockaway public schools. Pricing for public schools outside the Rockaways will be $10/student for a maximum of 25 students or flat rate of $250. Pricing for private school groups will be $15/student with a maximum of 25 students or a flat rate of $375. Home school groups can call for pricing!

Living Classroom: The Shoreline Environment

This class will focus on the ecosystems that surround coastal communities. Students will learn about the animals and plants that can be found in and around the oceans and bays in coastal areas like the Rockaways, including oysters, dune plants, fish, and sharks. After a brief discussion inside, students will get the opportunity to explore those wildlife communities. Activity dependent on tide, weather, and season.

Each class is one hour in length.
Classes are conducted during the regular school day at the RISE Center, at 58-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

Living Classroom: Birds of the Rockaways

This class will focus on the basics of local birds and what makes shorebirds (and those native to the Rockaways!) so important to our ecosystem. Students will learn the basics of bird identification and behavior, as well as how to use binoculars, before they head outside to try their skills on the boardwalk, where they'll get the chance to see a variety of different birds and start their "life lists."

Classes take place at the RISE Center at 58-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
Each class is an hour in length.

Living Classroom: Marine Debris

What is marine debris, and why is it so harmful? In this workshop, students will explore the various threats that marine debris poses to wildlife and people in and around the marine environment. Students will get the opportunity to collect some marine debris themselves, leaving the shoreline cleaner than when they arrived, and participate in a hands-on activity where they have the opportunity to learn, up close, about the different materials and products that make their way into the marine environment.

Each class is one hour in length.
Classes are conducted during the regular school day from our headquarters at the RISE Center, at 58-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
