RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability & Equity) 40.5919° N -73.7883° W

Description

Established in 2005, RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability & Equity) leads initiatives created “by the community, for the community.” We see potential in people and places that are often overlooked or marginalized. From our first community-led planning effort, which led to the creation of a 28-acre waterfront park on a lot that had been an illegal dumping ground, to our recent work transforming a dilapidated firehouse in the heart of Far Rockaway into a hub for youth and community programming, RISE brings people of all ages together to learn to appreciate the natural and built environment of the Rockaway peninsula in southeast Queens.

Lunch Notes

Lunch can be eaten on RISE's main floor or on the picnic tables outside in the Rockaway Hip-Hop Community Garden.

Cultural Immigrant Initiative: Guyanese Fishing/Net Knitting

There is nowhere in NYC as diverse as the fishing piers and beaches of Far Rockaway, where fishermen from all over the world come together at the water's edge. Many local fishermen use cast nets, an ancient fishing technique with a long history in Guyana, to catch fish on Jamaica Bay.

This hands-on workshop teaches students about the history of Guyanese fishing and some of the crafts and skills that go into it. Students will learn about Guyanese cast net fishing, it's history, the art of making the nets, and their current day use in the Rockaways. Students will practice casting a net themselves and also also get the chance to learn basic knots. All students will leave the workshop with their own knot bracelet and instruction guide.

Living Classroom: Marine Debris

What is marine debris, and why is it so harmful? In this workshop, students will explore the various threats that marine debris poses to wildlife and people in and around the marine environment. Students will get the opportunity to collect some marine debris themselves, leaving the shoreline cleaner than when they arrived, and participate in a hands-on activity where they have the opportunity to learn, up close, about the different materials and products that make their way into the marine environment.

Each class is one hour in length.
Classes are conducted during the regular school day from our headquarters at the RISE Center, at 58-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
