Living Classroom: Marine Debris

Description

What is marine debris, and why is it so harmful? In this workshop, students will explore the various threats that marine debris poses to wildlife and people in and around the marine environment. Students will get the opportunity to collect some marine debris themselves, leaving the shoreline cleaner than when they arrived, and participate in a hands-on activity where they have the opportunity to learn, up close, about the different materials and products that make their way into the marine environment.

Each class is one hour in length.
Classes are conducted during the regular school day from our headquarters at the RISE Center, at 58-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

Workshops address a variety of topics specifically designed for Pre-K-6 classes with lessons focused on marine science, climate change, migratory birds, and more! Each workshop involves hands-on activities to actively engage learners!

All programs are free for Rockaway public schools. Pricing for public schools outside the Rockaways will be $10/student for a maximum of 25 students or flat rate of $250. Pricing for private school groups will be $15/student with a maximum of 25 students or a flat rate of $375. Home school groups can call for pricing!

RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability & Equity)

Established in 2005, RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability & Equity) leads initiatives created “by the community, for the community.” We see potential in people and places that are often overlooked or marginalized. From our first community-led planning effort, which led to the creation of a 28-acre waterfront park on a lot that had been an illegal dumping ground, to our recent work transforming a dilapidated firehouse in the heart of Far Rockaway into a hub for youth and community programming, RISE brings people of all ages together to learn to appreciate the natural and built environment of the Rockaway peninsula in southeast Queens.
