Students Light the World [Virtual]

Description

Lewis Latimer paid close attention to the world around him, seeking ways to improve it and ensure every home and business could enjoy the new opportunities brought by the light bulb. In this interactive experience, students practice their critical thinking skills through a game of I, Spy, making connections between archival objects and present-day objects.

K-2 students complete a squishy circuit activity, learning the basic concepts of how electricity and energy produce light through a fun playdough circuit challenge.

3rd - 5th grade students become engineers, practicing problem-solving, developing innovative solutions for use in the classroom, and illuminating their ideas using simple circuits.

6th - 8th grade students become engineers, practicing problem-solving, developing innovative solutions for use in the classroom, and illuminating their ideas using series and parallel circuits.

Lewis Latimer House

Lewis H. Latimer (1848-1928) was an African American inventor whose innovations in designing carbon filaments ushered in the age of electric light. Latimer was the son of fugitive slaves, a self-taught master draftsman, an expert on patent law, a poet, and painter--in short, a Renaissance man. The historic Victorian home of Lewis Latimer stands now as a testament to this talented and gracious man.
