Living Classroom: Coastline Resilience

Description

Course overview: This class will focus on rising seas, and the challenges they present to coastal communities. Students will learn about the problems caused by flooding and pressing coastal hazards of the 21st century. Students will design (using a hands-on, engineering approach) a “coastline” that will be tested against natural hazards. This course will also introduce students to basic ecology/restoration and geology/mineralogy.
Location/Timing: Classes take place at the RISE Center at 58-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Each class is 90 minutes in length. Workshops address a variety of topics specifically designed for Pre-K-6 grade classes

RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability & Equity)

Established in 2005, RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability & Equity) leads initiatives created “by the community, for the community.” We see potential in people and places that are often overlooked or marginalized. From our first community-led planning effort, which led to the creation of a 28-acre waterfront park on a lot that had been an illegal dumping ground, to our recent work transforming a dilapidated firehouse in the heart of Far Rockaway into a hub for youth and community programming, RISE brings people of all ages together to learn to appreciate the natural and built environment of the Rockaway peninsula in southeast Queens.
