Lewis Latimer House Tour [In-School Program]
Description
Lewis Latimer was a classic renaissance man. He was an inventor, self-taught engineer, painter and poet. He became a pioneer for electrical advancements and worked closely with household names like Thomas Edison. Today, the Latimers have left behind a home filled with historical memories in Flushing, Queens. Students will learn about the life and scientific contributions of Lewis Howard Latimer, through a tour of the museum.

Lewis H. Latimer (1848-1928) was an African American inventor whose innovations in designing carbon filaments ushered in the age of electric light. Latimer was the son of fugitive slaves, a self-taught master draftsman, an expert on patent law, a poet, and painter--in short, a Renaissance man. The historic Victorian home of Lewis Latimer stands now as a testament to this talented and gracious man.
