Description

Battery Park City is a neighborhood on the lower west side of Manhattan, with 36 acres of parks and greenspaces open to the public year-round. Each park in the neighborhood has its own unique features, and field trips are located in various parks to showcase these. Trips take place in the following park spaces:
Rockefeller Park's sunny lawns and waterfront views offer a unique perspective as students learn about resilient parks and cities.
Rector Park is notable for it’s designation along the DEC’s New York State Birding Trail. Its cool gardens are an important stop for migrating and local wildlife.
South Cove offers cool shady woodland plantings overlooking a quiet cove of the Hudson River.
Newly reopened Wagner Park has resilient infrastructure to reduce coastal flood risks and provide front lines protection from climate-related extreme weather. This beloved park on the southern end of the Battery Park City neighborhood allows visitors to get up close to the Hudson River, explore native plantings, and enjoy beautiful art installations.

Lunch Notes

Students are encouraged to bring a packed lunch. Time will be given after field trips end to enjoy a picnic lunch in the park. Water fountains are available to refill bottles. Depending on which park your field trip takes place, students will have access to benches and/or picnic tables, often with sweeping views of the park and river, to eat their lunches. Please note: all of our programs take place outside with no indoor spaces (other than restroom facilities). Please reach out to program staff in the event of inclement weather.

Bathroom Notes

Public restrooms are available near Rockefeller Park (Sustainable Landscapes), Wagner Park (Marine Education) and at the community space in 200 Rector Place (Birding BPC). These are permanent facilities with multiple stalls and drinking fountains.

Cancellation Policy

Any requests to cancel or reschedule a field trip must be made at least two weeks in advance of the scheduled field trip date by reaching out to BPCA program staff. We will do our best to reschedule you, but have a limited availability and cannot guarantee a rescheduled date.

We hold field trips in most weather conditions; in the event a field trip must be canceled due to inclement weather (pouring rain, lightning/thunder, extreme heat, etc.), BPCA staff will reach out to you and work to reschedule. If rescheduling isn’t possible, we will do our best to accommodate you in a future program.

Field Trip

Rockefeller Park; Sustainable Landscapes

Sustainable Landscapes invites students to step into the role of a climate scientist! We begin with a short introduction where we orient ourselves within Battery Park City, and define key terms such as "sustainability" and “resiliency”.

Together, we explore the park, conducting hands-on experiments that show us firsthand how climate impacts our environments and what we can do to keep ourselves and our city safe in unpredictable weather. We focus on three main ideas: water management, shade and temperature management, and nature as an antidote to our current climate crisis. We end in the Children’s Garden, where students are invited to use their senses to explore a biodiverse mini-ecosystem in the heart of the city. We conclude our program near where we first met, leading a closing discussion on what we experienced and what ideas we are taking with us.

After the program ends, students are welcome to enjoy their lunch on shady benches in Rockefeller Park

South Cove: Marine Education

Marine Education engages students in discussion about the social and geologic history of the Hudson River to provide context. The class is given a demonstration of rod and reel safety and proper usage, before breaking into groups: Groups will switch halfway through the program, so every student can explore both urban park ecosystem and Hudson River Estuary ecology.
Catch-and-release fishing teaches students about biodiversity within the river, and to make meaningful connections with nature. Any species caught will be measured, identified, and kept in aquaria for observation before being released back into the river.
A nature walk through the nearby park introduces sustainability and water conservation concepts, and engages students in the living environment around us.
The program concludes by bringing the class back together to observe and learn about any species caught during the trip, and share our experiences. Any species caught are documented and returned safely to the river.
After the program ends, students are welcome to enjoy their lunch on shady benches nearby.

Rector Park; Birding Battery Park City

Learn what birds live in your backyard and develop skills for observing nature closely. This trip takes students on an exploration of the NYS Birding Trail in Battery Park City. Students will learn what birds need to thrive in an urban environment, and develop the skills to locate, observe, and identify migratory and resident wildlife around the city. Activities along the way highlight different species adaptations, and how to notice signs of wildlife in the parks.
