Understand what the urban forest is and why it is so necessary to have one here in NYC. This program explores the impact of trees in our local and changing climate, how trees benefit us and why we should take simple steps to care for them in our city. This program takes place inside the GCC classroom and includes an outdoor activity with nearby street trees.
The Gowanus Canal has captivated people for more than 400 years, from its salt marsh era to a polluted industrial waterway in Brooklyn that today is undergoing clean up and revitalization. Gowanus Canal Conservancy (GCC) is dedicated to facilitating the development of a resilient, vibrant, open space network centered on the Gowanus Canal through activating and empowering community stewardship of the Gowanus Watershed. Since 2006, we have served as the environmental steward for the neighborhood through leading volunteer and youth stewardship; engaging students in environmental issues; and working to advocate for, build, and maintain innovative green infrastructure around the Gowanus Canal.
