November - Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Description

**Race Project KC events are for partner schools only. If you are interested in joining Race Project KC to attend these events, please visit our website at www.raceprojectkc.com to find out more.

This event will include icebreakers, gallery discussions, lunch and art-making. Students will discover how race and power permeate art, dissect it, and offer their own response. Students will visit the featured exhibition Napoleon: Power & Splendor to examine how Napoleon crafted his own all-powerful identity through self-aggrandizing portraits and opulent household goods. Students will compare the work of contemporary artists like Kehinde Wiley, who are rewriting traditional narratives of power and privilege by inserting new stories into artwork from the past. Students will consider their own stories and values, and work with local artist Heinrich Toh to create Wiley-inspired re-mixed portraits highlighting a person or group of people left out of the traditional narrative of art history. Final portraits will be shared.
