Study with us mummichogs, Gowanus’ most resilient fish. We will learn about adaptation, survival, their role in the ecosystem and our impact on their habitat. This program takes place inside the GCC Classroom and includes a walk to the Gowanus Canal to view the habitat of these fish and other marine creatures.
The Gowanus Canal has captivated people for more than 400 years, from its salt marsh era to a polluted industrial waterway in Brooklyn that today is undergoing clean up and revitalization. Gowanus Canal Conservancy (GCC) is dedicated to facilitating the development of a resilient, vibrant, open space network centered on the Gowanus Canal through activating and empowering community stewardship of the Gowanus Watershed. Since 2006, we have served as the environmental steward for the neighborhood through leading volunteer and youth stewardship; engaging students in environmental issues; and working to advocate for, build, and maintain innovative green infrastructure around the Gowanus Canal.
