This lesson offers a primer on plant identification through leaves, opening the door for a lifetime of connection with nature - even within the city! Students will learn about different leaf shapes, textures and vein arrangements, chart the progression of a plant from seed to seedling, discover the leaf's many functions, and be given the vocabulary to talk about different leaves. Putting knowledge into practice, they'll explore our garden and practice drawing, labeling and identifying leaves.
Gitano Garden is a large raised-bed vegetable and herb garden located on the expansive back patio of Gitano NYC, a new pop-up Mexican restaurant on the corner of Canal St. & 6th Avenue. The garden was created to provide NYC students with a calm and relaxing space in which to explore urban agriculture, culinary uses of herbs, plant anatomy, worm composting, and the magic of growing food. Field trips are offered to students of all ages at no cost.
