Offered At

The Jazz Museum

Here at the American Jazz Museum, we are Kansas City’s home to the sounds and stories that put this city on the map. Explore history, art, and culture through themes of storytelling, struggle, and leadership.

Teachers Our learning opportunities are cross-curricular. We currently offer 4th-6th grade language arts field trips that culminate in re-enacting the stories of Jazz greats. Our high school field trips (History, ELA, Music) ask students to discover themes in Music History. Through poetry and improv, we turn those themes into communication and leadership skills. Further opportunities include, independent research projects (grades 9 and up), composition of music, and musical oral history projects.

Students We share the lives of musicians, whose voices travelled around the world (really- even before the internet!). What can your voice do? What Kansas City stories and lives do you think should be shared around the world? Join our Musical Oral History Project to capture Kansas City voices. To develop storytelling skills, in music and writing, we have Saturday activities open to all ages. You can apply to our Youth Council to be an ambassador for the museum in the community. You are welcome here anytime. There’s always music playing, just for you!

Families What is fun, educational, and engaging? Parents and children will all love our Friday night Jazz Storytellers in the Gem theatre (or on the lawn). Afterwards, you may have some extra percussion at the dinner table. Our permanent collection, filled with listening booths and interactives, is a great way to spend an afternoon or weekend morning. The 18th and Vine district has so much to share with your whole family. We’ll see you soon!
