This site visit takes place at the public esplanade at 420 Carroll Street where we focus on the landscape, its intentional design, and future restoration. Together we explore the value of native plants in regard to resiliency, supporting biodiversty, and extending itself to human health and well-being.
Students will have the opportunity to use design plans used by landscape architects, identify native plants, survey and explore invertebrates supported by the planted spaces, and design their own salt marsh, inspired by the restoration coming soon to the adjacent area next to this site. Activities and materials will be adjusted by grade level.
Important notes:

The Gowanus Canal has captivated people for more than 400 years, from its salt marsh era to a polluted industrial waterway in Brooklyn that today is undergoing clean up and revitalization. Gowanus Canal Conservancy (GCC) is dedicated to facilitating the development of a resilient, vibrant, open space network centered on the Gowanus Canal through activating and empowering community stewardship of the Gowanus Watershed. Since 2006, we have served as the environmental steward for the neighborhood through leading volunteer and youth stewardship; engaging students in environmental issues; and working to advocate for, build, and maintain innovative green infrastructure around the Gowanus Canal.
