Community Science - Water Quality Testing

Description

Students investigate the Gowanus Canal’s water health and measure water quality parameters for dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity and turbidity during a 90 minute, in-person, outdoor field trip. Using testing equipment, students collect and discuss data. They discuss New York City’s combined sewer overflow (CSO) issue, solutions for cleaner water, the role of a keystone organism in water health, and why we value good water health of the Gowanus Canal and other NYC waterways. Students' water quality data is uploaded to a publicly accessible database after their trip. Teachers receive pre and post trip resources.

Offered At

Gowanus Canal Conservancy

The Gowanus Canal has captivated people for more than 400 years, from its salt marsh era to a polluted industrial waterway in Brooklyn that today is undergoing clean up and revitalization. Gowanus Canal Conservancy (GCC) is dedicated to facilitating the development of a resilient, vibrant, open space network centered on the Gowanus Canal through activating and empowering community stewardship of the Gowanus Watershed. Since 2006, we have served as the environmental steward for the neighborhood through leading volunteer and youth stewardship; engaging students in environmental issues; and working to advocate for, build, and maintain innovative green infrastructure around the Gowanus Canal.

At this time masks are still required to be worn by all program participants due to the inability to social distance throughout our programs. We provide masks for anyone who may need.
