Older students will explore the function of an urban garden and what it can bring to people and creatures in our community. Groups discuss subjects such as providing habitat for pollinators, the proven benefits of nature exposure for humans, the value of seeing where your food comes from, the nutritional and environmental benefits of eating local, unprocessed foods and the state of urban farming in NYC today.
Gitano Garden is a large raised-bed vegetable and herb garden located on the expansive back patio of Gitano NYC, a new pop-up Mexican restaurant on the corner of Canal St. & 6th Avenue. The garden was created to provide NYC students with a calm and relaxing space in which to explore urban agriculture, culinary uses of herbs, plant anatomy, worm composting, and the magic of growing food. Field trips are offered to students of all ages at no cost.
