Virtual Community Science Trip #1 (Water Quality)

Description

Middle and high school students will participate in a synchronous (in real time) 45-60 minute virtual field trip to the Gowanus Canal. Students will become community scientists by learning about local NYC waterways, how to assess waterway health, and how to analyze data to identify trends and tell compelling narrative stories.

Trips are free for schools that are located in the Gowanus watershed and New York State Environmental Justice areas in Brooklyn (see map here). All NYC public schools that demonstrate at least 50% economic need (DOE index) are free; other NYC public schools are $50; NYC private schools are $150.

Offered At

Gowanus Canal Conservancy

The Gowanus Canal has captivated people for more than 400 years, from its salt marsh era to a polluted industrial waterway in Brooklyn that today is undergoing clean up and revitalization. Gowanus Canal Conservancy (GCC) is dedicated to facilitating the development of a resilient, vibrant, open space network centered on the Gowanus Canal through activating and empowering community stewardship of the Gowanus Watershed. Since 2006, we have served as the environmental steward for the neighborhood through leading volunteer and youth stewardship; engaging students in environmental issues; and working to advocate for, build, and maintain innovative green infrastructure around the Gowanus Canal.

At this time masks are still required to be worn by all program participants due to the inability to social distance throughout our programs. We provide masks for anyone who may need.
